Lake Ronkonkoma and the Town Line

Lake Ronkonkoma takes its name from the lake at its center, the largest freshwater lake on Long Island. The hamlet is divided among three towns — Smithtown, Islip and Brookhaven — and the Smithtown portion is in the north, closest to Nesconset and Hauppauge. Route 347 and Smithtown Boulevard connect it to the rest of our service area.

The homes are mostly modest ranches, capes and split-levels from the post-war decades, with one- and two-car attached garages. It's inland and a freshwater lake, so salt air isn't the problem here — age and daily use are.

Typical Lake Ronkonkoma Repairs

  • Original extension springs on older single doors, sometimes without safety cables. We add safety cables or convert to torsion.
  • Doors knocked off track in narrow one-car garages where the car, bikes and the mower share the space.
  • Older openers with failed sensors or boards.
  • Worn bottom seals on slabs that have settled over the decades.

Extension Springs Need Safety Cables

Many older single doors here still use extension springs — the long springs that stretch along each side track. If one breaks without a safety cable running through it, the spring can fly across the garage. When we work on an extension-spring door, we make sure safety cables are in place. A new pair of extension springs with safety cables starts at $335; converting to torsion springs starts at $595.

One-Car Garages and Tight Spaces

A narrow one-car garage leaves little room between the car and the tracks. A bump from a mirror, a bike handlebar or a mower can bend a track enough to pop a roller out. If your door has started rubbing or leaning, call before it comes off; straightening a track (from $135) is much simpler than re-hanging a fallen door. See off-track repair.

Older Openers and Missing Sensors

Many of the openers we find in older Lake Ronkonkoma garages date from the 1990s or before. Some predate the photo-eye safety sensors that are standard on openers today, and a few have had their sensors disconnected or bypassed. That means the door won't stop for a child, a pet or a bike. If your opener has no sensors near the floor, or the sensors are taped over, please have it replaced. New openers installed start at $535, and our $75 coupon applies.

Making a Small Garage Work Harder

In a one-car garage, every inch counts. A wall-mount opener (from $895) frees the ceiling for overhead storage racks. Nylon rollers and a balanced door make it easy to lift by hand if the power's out. A keypad saves digging for a remote. And a new bottom seal keeps water and leaves out when the slab has settled.

Getting to You

We come in along Route 347 and Smithtown Boulevard from Nesconset and Hauppauge. If you're near the town line, tell us your street and we'll confirm we cover it.

Lake Ronkonkoma Questions We Hear on the Phone

"My door has springs along the sides and one snapped." That's an extension spring. Replace both, with safety cables, from $335. If the door has room, ask about converting to torsion.

"The door goes up crooked." Likely a cable slipping or fraying on one side. Stop using it; cables start at $205.

"Is my old opener worth fixing?" If it has sensors and only one part failed, often yes. If it's from the early '90s or older, or has no sensors, replace it.

"Can you come today?" When a technician is free, yes — call in the morning. Most parts are on the truck.

How much is an off-track garage door repair in Lake Ronkonkoma?

An off-track reset and re-hook starts at $185. If a track is bent, straightening starts at $135; if a cable broke and caused it, a pair of cables starts at $205.

Can you replace safety sensors on an older opener?

Yes. A new pair of sensors starts at $185. On very old openers, matching sensors may no longer be made; then a new opener (from $535 installed) is usually the better choice.

For a door that's more than a few years old, yes. A tune-up (from $135) includes lubrication, tightening, balance and opener checks, and it catches worn springs and frayed cables before they leave you stuck.
