Which garage door opener should I buy? For most Smithtown homes: a belt-drive opener with battery backup, like the LiftMaster 84505R (from $565 installed). For a garage under a bedroom or with low headroom: a wall-mount LiftMaster (from $895). On a budget: LiftMaster 8165W or Genie StealthDrive 750.

Chain, Belt or Wall-Mount?

Chain drive

The workhorse. A steel chain pulls the trolley along the rail. Strong and economical, but the loudest. Fine for a detached garage or one that isn't next to living space.

Belt drive

Same layout, with a steel-reinforced rubber belt instead of a chain. Much quieter and smooth, and most models have a DC motor with a soft start and stop. This is what we install most in the town's split-levels, colonials and ranches.

Wall-mount (jackshaft)

Mounts on the wall beside the door and turns the torsion bar directly. No rail, no chain, no motor hanging from the ceiling. The quietest option, and the answer for low ceilings or garages with storage overhead. It needs a torsion-spring door.

Features Worth Paying For

  • Battery backup. North Shore storms knock out power. A battery keeps the door working for a number of cycles so you're not lifting it by hand in the dark.
  • Wi-Fi / MyQ. Open and close from your phone, get an alert when the door is left open, let a delivery or a contractor in.
  • Camera. The 87504-267 has a camera on the opener, so you can see the garage from your phone.
  • Keypad. For kids coming home from school, a dog walker, or a neighbor checking the house.
  • Soft start and stop. Easier on the door, and quieter.

Measured for Your Garage

Before we recommend an opener, we measure: the door's height and width, the headroom between the top of the door and the ceiling, the room at the sides for a wall-mount, and whether there's an outlet where the opener goes. An 8-foot-tall door needs a rail extension (from $240). A low garage under a bedroom may be a wall-mount job. A one-piece tilt-up door from decades ago may need a different approach altogether.

We also check the springs and balance first. A new opener on a door with tired springs won't last. If the door needs work, we'll tell you before installing anything.

Low ceiling? Read our low-headroom and wall-mount opener guide.

What an Opener Installation Includes

  1. Remove and haul away

We take down the old opener, rail and old sensors, and take them with us if you want (from $85).

  2. Install and adjust

New rail or wall-mount, new sensors at the correct height, wall control by the door, travel and force set to your door.

  3. Program and test

Remotes, keypad, car HomeLink and the phone app set up; auto-reverse and sensor tests done with you watching.

Smart Openers and Phone Control

Most of the openers we install now connect to Wi-Fi and work with the myQ app: open and close from anywhere, get an alert when the door is left open, set it to close at a certain time at night, and see a history of when the door moved. That's useful when the kids come home from school, when a delivery needs to go inside the garage, or when you're away and can't remember whether you closed it.

If your Wi-Fi doesn't reach the garage, a range extender usually fixes it. If you have an older opener you want to keep, a MyQ smart hub (from $155) adds phone control to many existing openers.

Safety Rules We Follow on Every Install

  • Photo-eye sensors mounted no more than about six inches above the floor, on both sides, aimed at each other.
  • Wall control mounted out of children's reach and where you can see the door while pressing it.
  • Close force set as low as the door allows, then tested with an obstruction so the door reverses.
  • Manual release cord at a height an adult can reach, and you shown how to use it.
  • Door balanced before the opener is connected.

Opener Installation Questions

Straight answers with our starting prices. Last updated October 2026.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Installed with the opener included: LiftMaster 8165W from $535, Genie StealthDrive 750 from $589, LiftMaster 84505R belt drive with battery backup from $565, LiftMaster 87504-267 with a camera from $675 and a LiftMaster wall-mount from $895. Take $75 off with our opener coupon.

What is the quietest garage door opener?

A wall-mount opener, such as the LiftMaster 8500W or 98022, is the quietest because it mounts beside the door on the torsion bar and has no rail or trolley over the ceiling. Among ceiling openers, a belt drive with a DC motor is much quieter than a chain drive.

Can you install an opener I bought myself?

Yes. Installing a customer-supplied opener starts at $295 for labor. We'll check that it suits your door's size and headroom before we start. Our 3-year opener warranty covers openers we supply; for your own opener, the manufacturer's warranty applies and our labor is covered.

Do I need battery backup on a garage door opener?

If you lose power during storms or rely on the garage as your main entrance, yes. A battery backup lets the opener run for a number of cycles during an outage. Some openers have it built in; others accept an add-on battery from $129.

What garage door opener works for low headroom?

A wall-mount opener needs only a few inches above the door and no ceiling rail, so it suits garages with low ceilings, cathedral ceilings or storage racks overhead. We measure the headroom and side room before recommending one.

How long does a garage door opener last?

A good residential opener commonly lasts 10 to 15 years, longer with a balanced door and a yearly check. Openers fail early when they are forced to lift a door with weak springs.
