Should You Repair or Replace an Older Garage Door?

Most garage doors in the Town of Smithtown are on houses from the 1950s to the 1970s, and many are on their second or third door. When something breaks, it's fair to ask whether to fix it again or start fresh. Here's how we think about it.

Quick answer

Is it worth repairing an old garage door? If the sections are straight and solid, almost always. Springs (from $489), cables (from $205), rollers and seals can renew a door for a fraction of a new one. Replace when sections are damaged or rotted, parts are discontinued, or repairs approach a third of a new door's price (singles from $1,575).

Repair Makes Sense When…

  • The sections are straight, with no rust-through or rot.
  • The problem is a moving part: springs, cables, rollers, hinges, an opener, a seal.
  • You like how the door looks.
  • The repair is a small fraction of a new door's price.

Moving parts are meant to be replaced. A door with new springs, cables, nylon rollers and a fresh tune-up can run smoothly for many more years.

Replacement Makes Sense When…

  • Two or more sections are damaged, or a car pushed in the door and bent the tracks.
  • The steel has rusted through at the bottom, or the wood is soft and rotting in more than one place.
  • Parts are discontinued. Replacement sections for many older doors aren't made anymore.
  • The door is thin and uninsulated on an attached garage, and you want it warmer and quieter.
  • It's an old one-piece tilt-up door. These swing out over the driveway and are hard to keep balanced and safe.
  • The repairs keep adding up. Several repairs in a few years on a tired door is a sign.

A Rough Rule of Thumb

If a repair would cost more than about a third of a comparable new door, we'll show you both numbers. For a single door, new starts at $1,575 installed (insulated $2,015); for a double, $2,525 (insulated $2,975). Those include new tracks, springs and seals, which a repair wouldn't.

Some Typical Cases

Broken spring on a solid 15-year-old steel door: repair. Both springs from $489, maybe nylon rollers too.

Bottom section rusted through on a 30-year-old thin steel door, opener also tired: often a new insulated door and opener, especially with our $300 door and $75 opener coupons.

Car backed into the door, one section bent, current model: replace that section (from $265).

Wood door on an older St. James house, sound but heavy and hard to lift: repair — the springs are probably undersized for its weight.

Our Approach

We'd rather fix your door and have you call us again in ten years than sell you a door you didn't need. When we recommend replacing, we'll tell you exactly why. See garage door repair and new garage doors.

Side-by-Side: Fix It or Start Over

Add up the repairs a door needs now and in the next year or two. If that total comes close to a third of a new door, it's worth comparing.

Repair or Replace Questions

Straight answers with our starting prices. Last updated October 2026.

When should I replace my garage door instead of repairing it?

Replace it when more than one section is damaged, the door is rotted or rusted through, parts are no longer made, it's a thin uninsulated door on an attached garage you want warmer and quieter, or repairs would cost more than about a third of a new door.

How long do garage doors last?

A well-kept steel door commonly lasts 20 to 30 years; springs, cables, rollers and openers are replaced along the way. Wood doors last as long as their finish is kept up. A door that's still straight and solid is usually worth repairing.

Does a new garage door add value to a house?

A new garage door is one of the most visible changes you can make to the front of a house, and it's often recommended when selling. An insulated door also makes an attached garage more comfortable.
